The US government passed the National Environment Protection Act (NEPA) in 1970 to help protect the environment from public and private actions such as corporate pollution or excessive logging. Remediation

Definition:
Correction or improvement of a problem, such as work that is done to clean up or stop the release of chemicals from a contaminated site. After investigation of a site, remedial work may include removing soil and/or drums, capping the site or collecting and treating the contaminated fluids.

Aerobic treatment

Definition:
Process by which microbes decompose complex organic compounds in the presence of oxygen and use the liberated energy for reproduction and growth. Types of aerobic processes include extended aeration, trickling filtration, and rotating biological contactors.
